Time To Come Together
November 5th 2008 08:00
Well its finally over; after what seemed like an eternity, Barack Obama will be the next President.
Millions of us are celebrating all around the country and all around world, and rightfully so.
But after all the celebrations are done, after all the speeches and victory parties are over, after those whose candidates lost deal with the reality of their defeat, let's come together.
Its an entirely overused cliche, but if there's anything this country needs right now its unity.
So now that the roller coaster ride is over, let's put the politics aside to fix the problems that lie before us. Obama supporters are elated, and for good reason. McCain supporters are disappointed, and maybe even a little bitter or angry, and that's understandable. Both sides poured immense energy, time, and money into this marathon campaign, and its only natural to feel the emotions that come with victory and those that come with defeat.
But in the coming days, after the emotions of this election are dealt with, the problems we have will still be there, and they effect us all: Democrats, Republicans, Independents. And they'll take the efforts of many to fix. So let's do the right thing: come together. And its not just coming together to fix problems, either. I've seen some tension between Obama supporters and McCain supporters. I've seen it in person and on the vast expanses of online communities. But now the election is over. Nothing will change it, so once the yard signs and the bumper stickers come down, let's try to put aside the bitterness and passion that come with any political campaign and come together again. Let's do the right thing and get back to "normal". In what I thought was the finest moment of his campaign, John McCain delivered a gracious concession speech. If McCain, who has to be feeling the defeat more than anyone, can be gracious, so can his supporters.
This election inspired people, energized people, and got them to pour their energy into it like none other in history. People were passionate about it. It was so easy to get wrapped up in this election and lost in the world of politics, but now that its over, give yourself a break. Take a walk. Step away from the TV or computer for a while. If you're an Obama supporter, go hug a McCain supporter. If you're a McCain supporter, hug an Obama fan. Or shake hands or smile or whatever you do. But do something. Enjoy some time away from the politics, because the campaigning is over, and now we have a long road ahead of us as we all have to help fix the mess that the Bush administration will leave us with. So take a deep breath, clear your head of the partisan politics, and join the post-election world. We've got a long haul in front of us, and its going to take unity to get us through it. There's just no other way.
